I was 15.
I had known him for several years at this point and we had actually become very close friends. He had even dated a few of my friends and found that I would lend an ear and advice when those relationships weren’t going very well.
Of course, I thought he was super cute. He was broad shouldered and handsome. He was a star athlete and had a truck. But there was way too much High School baggage with this one! I mean, he had dated my friends! So much drama and I hate drama!
But he was persistent. He asked me out over and over again, until one of my girlfriends talked me into going on a double date with she and her boyfriend. A double date. That won’t be so bad. That way, if it starts anything, at least I could say we weren’t alone! I will never forget that night. It was Halloween time, so we went to a Haunted Corn Maze, which we got kicked out of… Then we went and saw The Ring. You guys remember that movie, don’t you? The one with the freaky little girl who climbs out of the TV. SEVEN DAYSSSSS…
Well, on the ride home, we sat in the back of my friend’s Jeep. It was a Jeep and she was a terrible driver (sorry Em!) so I was being tossed all over the place. I get TERRIBLY car sick, so this was becoming more and more of a problem as the drive home continued. What he did next changed my mind about him forever. He scooted close, wrapped his arm around my shoulders and held me tight so I wouldn’t get so sick in the turns.
He has been mine ever since.
That was almost 15 years ago. In the middle of that time, we graduated High School, went to different colleges and graduated from those colleges, all while staying together. The summer before our senior year at each of our Universities, he got down on one knee at a baseball game in front of all of our family and friends and asked me to be his wife.
Thinking back now, WE WERE SO YOUNG! I mean, we were 21 when we got engaged. But we didn’t care. I was his and he was mine.
I spent my entire senior year planning the perfect wedding and on May 16, 2009, I walked down the aisle to my best friend. We had 9 bridesmaids and 9 groomsmen, who all wore different colors. It was so perfect. We danced all night long.
Now here we are, 8 years later. Just the two of us has become the FIVE of us. He is the most amazing husband and father. The life he has built for us is nothing short of phenomenal. I know it sounds super cliché, but when you know, you know. I guess I knew 15 years ago in the backseat of that Jeep that this one was the catch of a lifetime, and I have held onto him ever since.
Happy Anniversary Babe.
